Assessing and Addressing Literacy Needs: Cases and Instructional Strategies is designed to help preservice and inservice teachers understand the problems that children encounter when learning to read and to provide key instructional strategies related to best practices in literacy instruction. The text promotes reflection and analysis that will provoke thoughtful responses and discussions to help teachers use assessments to identify problems and employ appropriate strategies to help their students become better readers.

This handbook provides a practical and useable guide to identifying preschool and early school-aged children's strengths and needs across multiple domains of emergent and early literacy, to include phonological awareness, alphabet knowledge, print awareness, narrative, and vocabulary. Specific approaches to assessing and monitoring growth in "high priority" areas of literacy are provided. This handbook also provides guidance for evaluating children's learning environments, including supports with the home and classroom.

Emergent Literacy: Lessons for Success is a flexible tool designed for speech-language pathologists to enhance emergent literacy intervention for preschool and kindergarten-age children. The book includes 90 lessons addressing key areas of emergent literacy: phonological awareness, print concepts, alphabet knowledge, emergent writing, inferential language, and vocabulary. These lessons are suitable for use in clinical settings as well as in collaboration with classroom teachers. Also included are an overview of emergent literacy, differentiation recommendations, and suggestions for lesson integration across the key areas.

This volume draws together research and practice from the fields of literacy education and inclusion. As such it provides an insight into current theory, researchand issues associated with teaching literacy to all students in inclusive classrooms. Literacy remains a critical success factor for students, as the basis for concurrent and future learning throughout the curriculum. This book discusses aspects of the theory and practice of qualitative research in the specific context of language and literacy education. It addresses epistemological perspectives, methodological problems, and practical considerations related to research involvements in areas of language education and literacy studies rather than generic issues of other fields of social sciences. The volume starts with Theoretical Considerations in the first part and raises some epistemological and theoretical concerns that are rarely debated in the specific context of research on language and literacy teaching. The second part, Methodological Approaches explores issues of the design and implementation of language and literacy education research within the framework of some of the major established qualitative research traditions. Finally, the part on Research in Action discusses practical aspects of a few actual instances of qualitative research on language and literacy education in different contexts.
