Facts on the web
Having accurate information is essential in news reporting. Sometimes it is necessary to check that facts and information reported in a story. Here are a few resources to do so:
- FactCheckEdWe monitor the factual accuracy of what is said by major U.S. political players in the form of TV ads, debates, speeches, interviews and news releases. Our goal is to apply the best practices of both journalism and scholarship, and to increase public knowledge and understanding.
- NewsTrust: Educational ResourcesOur web review tools enable people to rate stories for accuracy, fairness, sourcing, context and other core journalistic principles — and become more discriminating news consumers in the process.
- Center for Media and DemocracyA non-profit investigative reporting group. Our reporting and analysis focus on exposing corporate spin and government propaganda.
- PolitiFact: Sorting out the truth in politicsPolitiFact is a project of the St. Petersburg Times to help you find the truth in politics. We research their statements and then rate the accuracy on our Truth-O-Meter – True, Mostly True, Half True, Mostly False and False. The most ridiculous falsehoods get our lowest rating, Pants on Fire.
The purpose of this website, and an accompanying column in the Sunday print edition of The Washington Post, is to “truth squad” the statements of political figures regarding issues of great importance, be they national, international or local.

We are a nonpartisan, nonprofit “consumer advocate” for voters that aims to reduce the level of deception and confusion in U.S. politics.
