This workshop will clarify plagiarism, look at USC’s policy on academic integrity, identify various types of plagiarism and strategies to prevent it. Avoiding plagiarism is important to effectively join the scholarly conversation, building on existing research, and incorporate our own ideas.  

Learning Outcomes:

  • Define plagiarism and academic integrity

  • Identify types of plagiarism

  • Develop strategies for avoiding plagiarism and effectively paraphrasing someone else’s ideas

Annotated Bibliographies Workshop

 

Annotated bibliographies are lists of cited sources that include a brief summary. They allow you to explore how different types of sources contribute to the scholarly conversation and understanding of a research problem. They help to strengthen your analytical and evaluative skills. After this online workshop, you will be able to:

  • Define annotated bibliography

  • Identify types of annotations

  • Develop strategies to critically evaluate reference sources and their relevance for your research

  • Use the APA citation style (or another citation style) to effectively format your annotated bibliography

Organize Your Research with RefWorks

This workshop will introduce you to the features of RefWorks, a citation manager available at no cost to all current USC students, staff and faculty. 

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

  • Maintain a personal RefWorks account

  • Organize citations and PDFs in RefWorks

  • Create a reference list and citations through the citation manager

This workshop will focus on how to format in-text citations as outlined in the APA Style Guide 7th edition.  Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with a hands-on activity to practice the material covered and ask questions.

After this workshop, you will:

  • Know how to format narrative and parenthetical in-text citations
  • Know how to format direct quotes and block quotes

Search Strategies: Part 1

This workshop will introduce attendees to academic search strategies using USC Libraries research platforms. We will use keyword searching and search techniques to manipulate our search results.

Advanced Searching: PsycINFO

This workshop is an advanced overview of APA's PsycINFO database.  Instructor will provide an overview on advanced search techniques and filters, how to utilize tools and features unique to PsycINFO in order to conduct keyword searches.

  • Understand how to use and locate the thesaurus/subject terms feature
