Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery (IDD): Microfilm Scanning

A Guide to all IDD Services

Microfilm Scanning Services

  • Microforms, which includes microfiche and microfilm, are reproductions of books, newspapers, serials, reports, dissertations and other research materials on physical film. A special viewer is required to view, scan, and print from this format.
  • USC owns many items in this format which are discoverable in the USC LIbraries Catalog. Microform materials not owned or unavailable from USC Libraries can be requested via interlibrary loan.
  • Current USC staff, faculty, and students can view, scan, or print from this format using IDD's microfilm scanner which is available by appointment and located in Leavey Library in the Leavey Administration Suite, room 114.
  • Appointments to use the IDD scanner can be scheduled for up to 4 hours during regular business hours 9 AM - 5 PM, Monday through Friday. Please contact us at idd@usc.edu to schedule an appointment.
  • Grand Avenue Library also has a microfilm scanner and viewer available for USC users and affiliates at their location. Please contact Grand Avenue Library for details.
  • We recommend you bring a flash drive or other storage device to save your scans or you can email them to yourself from the workstation.
  • If this is your first time using this scanner, we will provide a brief 5-10 training session before use.
  • You may also request that IDD scan a microform for you, however the amount is subject to copyright guidelines.  The delivery turnaround time for this service ranges from 5 to 10 days, depending on the length and complexity of the request.
