Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery (IDD): Overdue & Lost Item Policies

A Guide to all IDD Services

Overdue and Lost Item Policies

Interlibrary loan books and other physical materials borrowed from other partner libraries and institutions need to be returned by the due date indicated.  These items do not belong to USC and ultimately the IDD user community and the Libraries are responsible for the condition and timely return to their owning libraries.

If not returned, the Libraries are charged replacement fines which are offset by overdue and non-return fees incurred to our users.  The current replacement fee is $150.00, which is in line with the amount charged for lost USC-owned materials.

  • You will receive a reminder notification via email when an ILL loan is about to be due followed by overdue reminders after the due date.
  • If ILL items are not returned on or about the due date, your IDD account will blocked until all overdue items are returned.
  • ILL items lost or not returned will be automatically charged a $150.00 replacement fee. Once the fine is paid, please contact us at idd@usc.edu or (213) 740-4020 to unblock your account.
  • Multiple volume requests (i.e. several volumes in one request) will be charged at $150.00 per volume.

Please note that replacement copies of lost items are no longer accepted in lieu of the replacement fee. However, we are willing to work with you and the lending library to ensure all borrowed physical requests are returned to avoid these charges.

Replacement fines can be paid at any USC Libraries circulation desk. Again, please contact IDD when the fee is paid so that we may unblock your account.

Excessive or consistent overdue items will result in permanent suspension of IDD privileges.
