Reviewing a papers references and subsequent papers that cite is a great way to discover related literature. Subscribed databases may also nclude data visualization tools to help with discovering relevant, and highly-cited papers. Try Web of Science and Scopus, and compare ease-of-use and results with some of the other citation mapping tools listed below.

Web of Science
Interdisciplinary collection of journal articles, conference proceedings, and books. Collection of seven online database: Conference Proceedings Citation Index, Science Citation Index, Social Sciences Citation Index, Arts & Humanities Citation Index, Index Chemicus, Current Chemical Reactions, and Book Citation Index. Coverage is 1900-present.
Scopus
Large abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature in science, technology, medicine, social sciences, and arts and humanities. Includes bibliometrics tools to track, analyze and visualize research.

Google Scholar
One of Google’s longest-running services, Google Scholar is an academic search engine that searches across scholarly literature, including books, articles, white papers, conference proceedings, and more. Key features include "Cited by" and "Related articles." Utilize the "Advanced search" for better results.
Semantic Scholar
Semantic Scholar is a free, AI-powered research tool for scientific literature, based at the Allen Institute for AI.
