COMM 209: Communication and Media Economics: Assignment

Assignment

This Research Guide was created to assist you in locating resources to use in completing the COMM 209 Final Group Projects, in which you are asked to prepare a briefing on the company to which you are assigned. This briefing will include, among other aspects:
  • history
  • management
  • primary business
  • customers
  • status in the industry
  • use of technology

COMM 209 participants are asked to conduct research in groups on a topic related to this course. The goal of this assignment is to analyze specific media entities, and to relate the analysis to the readings / topics discussed in class.

For your assigned media entity, briefly discuss its history, business strategy, and role in its industry. Then choose one interesting challenge or opportunity relevant to your media entity, and analyze it in terms of the economic principles and readings from the class.

The final presentations must include visual aids and a short paper (5-7 pages suggested) to be turned in the last day of class,  and they should not exceed 10 minutes in length. Please cite your sources, try to use primary source material where available, and indicate each group member’s area of responsibility at the end of the paper. Any citation method is fine (APA preferred). Do not count the reference list when counting the number of pages in your paper. Extra credit will be given to the presenter(s) of each group (max. 3 presenters per group suggested).
