Scholarly Communication (Health Sciences)

Who do these mandates apply to?

If a research project has been funded by a federal agency, the principal investigator may be required to comply with two types of public access to their research products:

  • ensure all publications arising from this funding are publicly available in an approved repository.
  • ensure all data arising from this funding are publicly available for re-use in an approved repository. Typically, a data management plan that describes how the data will be stored and shared is required as part of the grant application process.

This guide provides information to help you understand and comply with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Public Access Policy and NIH Policy for Data Management and Sharing, and the National Science Foundation (NSF) Data Sharing Policy and Public Access Policy. Contact the Libraries for help understanding these or other public access mandates.
