NIH Public Access Policy: Introduction

These videos were created by librarians at the Norris Medical Library with the Southern California Clinical & Translational Science Institute (SC CTSI) to educate and support researchers who have received grant funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). 

There are four videos that we created that we hope address researchers' needs depending on where they are in the process of completing their research and sharing the results.

Video 1:

Provides an overview of the NIH Public Access Policy and answers the following questions:

• What is a PMID? What is a PMCID?
• What is the NIH Public Access Policy?
• Who is responsible for this compliance?
• How can a manuscript be submitted to PubMed Central? 
• How do I locate more information about this process?

Video 2:

Identifies key responsibilities of the Principal Investigator (PI)

• Act as a communication liaison to NIH
• Ensure publication acknowledgement and disclaimers
• Deposit manuscripts into PubMed Central
• Communicate expectations with all collaborators

Outlines relevant steps to complete prior to publication

• Locate and decipher Author Agreement/Copyright Transfer
• Overview of four methods for submitting manuscripts to PubMed Central

The following resources provide information about permissions related to specific publisher's copyright transfer agreements, and author addendum forms which can be used to supplement agreements. 

MyNCBI's My Bibliography is a useful tool that can assist with the submission process.  This video provides instruction on how to use My Bibliography to link funding to citations, and manage compliance with the NIH Public Access Policy.
