Citations: Purpose and Scope

What is the purpose of citations?

References are necessary to acknowledge and credit the sources used in your work.  They serve multiple purposes:

  • Shows the reader where your information originated
  • Gives credit to the original author or creator of the work
  • Helps to avoid plagiarism
  • Allows readers enough information to find the source(s) used

Citation Styles

There are various citations and disciplines typically have their standard style used for publications and academic work.  Scholarly journals will typically stipulate the citation style required for publication.  If you are uncertain which citation style you should be using, consult with your instructor or the journal submission requirements.
