Search Tips for Primary Sources

Primary source databases can contain a wealth of sources related to various topics throughout history. Here are some tips to effectively search for primary sources related to your topic. 

  • Brainstorm keywords related to your topic
    • Think of the who, what, when, and where of your topic
  • Think of the language that would be used at the time
    • Mindful of not replicating harmful or outdated language
  • Limit by the date range your event took place
  • Look at the primary sources cited in any secondary sources you read
