MLA Citation Guide: Periodicals

This guides offers examples on how to cite references following MLA citation guidelines

Examples

An article in a scholarly journal Include volume, issue number (if there is one), year, then pages.

Baum, Rosalie Murphy. "Alcoholism and Family Abuse in Maggie and The Bluest Eye."  Mosaic vol. 19 no.3, 1986, pp. 91-105. Bowering, George. "Baseball and the Canadian Imagination."  Canadian Literature no.108, 1986, pp. 115-124.

An article in a magazine Abbreviate the months. Use this order for dates: Day Month Year. If the article is not on consecutive pages (i.e., if it begins on one page and then jumps to other pages), specify only the first page, followed by a plus sign: e.g. p.23.

Bazell, Robert. "Science and Society: Growth Industry." New Republic 15 Mar. 1993, pp. 13-14. Nixon, Will. "Are We Burying Ourselves in Junk Mail?" E: Environmental Magazine Nov.-Dec. 1993, p. 30.

An unsigned article in a magazine

"The Decade of the Spy." Newsweek 7 Mar. 1994, pp. 26-27.

A newspaper article Omit any introductory article in the title: Los Angeles Times, not The Los Angeles Times. Specify the edition, if one is given on the front page.

Mangold, Catherine S. "Becoming a Land of the Smoke-Free, Ban by Ban."  New York Times 22 Mar. 1994, late ed., p. A1.

A newspaper editorial

"Death of a Writer." Editorial. New York Times 20 Apr. 1994, late ed., p. A18.
