A number of programs and research initiatives related to AI and music are currently available to both students and music educators who need training to effectively utilize AI tools, adapt teaching methodologies, and address the ethical and creative challenges posed by AI.
Several institutions are at the forefront of this approach. Exemplars of such initiatives:
Berklee Online: Offers courses such as
"AI for Music and Audio" Online Undergraduate level 4-Week Course, authored by Carlos Arana; and
"AI for Songwriters" Online Undergraduate level 4-Week Course, authored by Ben camp. This course explores the application of AI tools in music production, analysis, and composition.
Purdue University: Home to the AIM (Artificial Intelligence for Musicians) research group, which develops AI systems to assist musicians with practice and performance. Stanford University. Course syllabus: Music and AI – Music 356/CS 470. Instructor Ge Wang
University of Maryland: Focusing on personalized AI and digital humanities for music education, with researchers developing platforms to improve instrumental education. Grant-funded Project – See Project summary.
University of Rochester: Researchers are leveraging AI to empower musicians in production and dissemination of their art, with collaboration between the Eastman School of Music, Warner School of Education & Human Development, Hajim School of Engineering & Applied Sciences, and School of Arts & Sciences. Grant-funded Project.
University of Tennessee - Knoxville: Offers a certificate program in Artificial Intelligence Integration in Music (12 credit hours) covering topics like AI music composition, sound synthesis, and the development of AI tools for music production.
