The Marriage of Maria Braun
"As noted in an affectionate commentary track by Fassbinder's friend and fellow director Wim Wenders, The Marriage of Maria Braun (1979) is Fassbinder's undisputed masterwork, a critical and box-office triumph that fulfilled Fassbinder's goal of creating a 'German Hollywood melodrama'in the tradition of his director-hero, Douglas Sirk. Beautifully shot by Michael Ballhaus (who advanced to brilliant collaborations with Martin Scorsese), it stars Hanna Schygulla in her signature role as a newlywed whose missing husband returns in the mid-'50s, just as she's reinventing herself through opportunism, seduction, and blind ambition--a woman, like Germany, determined to forget her miserable past, with explosively tragic results."

Mein bester Feind = My Best Enemy

But World War II upends everything, turning Rudi into a Nazi and Victor into a helpless pawn. Then a priceless drawing by Michelangelo becomes crucial to Nazi plans, and only Victor's family knows where it is. The game of cat and mouse results in plane crashes, stolen identities, and the enigmatic key to Lena's heart."

Mein Führer = My Führer
"December 1944: Berlin lies in ruins and the war is as good as lost. Goebbels is convinced all the country needs is a re-energizing speech from the Führer. Adolf, however, is only a shadow of his former self; demoralized and depressed, he hides in his office. The only man who can help is Germany's finest acting teacher, Adolf Grünbaum -- a Jew."

"An actor of the Art Theatre Company of Hamburg, who subordinates everything to his success, befriends a principal figure in the Nazi power machinery and is drawn into the poisonous circle of evil from which he can no longer escape."

"A seemingly meek insurance agent has a secret: he's holding 10-year-old Wolfgang captive in a locked room in his basement. Chronicling a five-month period, the film creates a tense portrait of how the most mundane lives can mask the ugliest truth. With rich cinematic detail and unnerving insight, it's a masterfully executed study of a monster."

The Baron variously rides a cannonball during a war, becomes a favorite of the Tsarina at the court of St. Petersburg, duels with a jealous Potemkin, meets Casanova, receives the gift of eternal life from the diabolical Cagliostro, and even makes his way to the moon. A filmic fairy tale intended for audiences of every age."

Murer: Anatomy of a Trial
"On the basis of original records, Murer, Anatomy of a Trial, reconstructs the 1963 proceedings against Franz Murer, a wealthy Austrian farmer with a sterlilng reputation, that took place in Graz. This respected local politician and family man was in charge of the Vilnius ghetto from 1941-1943, where its residents called him the 'Butcher of Vilnius'. Solely 600 of the 80,000 Jews who originally lived there survived Nazi rule. Survivors came from around the world to testify at the trial, leaving little doubt of Murer's guilt. This resulted in one of the most serious scandals of Austria's Second Republic for which the justice system, press and governmental policy were responsible."
