E-books: Downloading USC E-books

A resource for information about E-books at USC Libraries.

You do not need to download an e-book to read it. All e-book providers give you the option to read titles online. The advantage of downloading is that you do not need to have an internet connection to read it.

Ebook Library (EBL) Yes! You can download most EBL E-books for up to 7 days at a time. 

Downloaded EBL e-books can be transferred to any portable ebook reader that supports Adobe Digital Editions (ADE)A list of these compatible devices on the ADE website.

If you are using an iPad, iPhone or Android device you can download and read EBL e-books using the (free) Bluefire Reader app for iPads/iPhones & Androids.

Printing is restricted to 20% of each e-book, and copying (and pasting) to 5%.

Most titles have multi-user access, which allows many users to access the same book at the same time.

Some titles only allow one user at a time. In this situation, a user will "check out" the title. When it's returned, another person can access it. 

 

Ebrary*

Many ebrary titles are downloadable for 14 days at a time.

Some titles cannot be downloaded (publisher restrictions). See the list of publishers that do not allow downloading.

There are 2 downloading options:

Option 1:
Download an entire E-book using Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) (not available for Kindles) for 14 days, if and when this option is available. You can download up to 10 e-books at a time.

Option 2:
If you are using an iPad, iPhone or Android device you can download and read Ebary e-books using the (free) Bluefire Reader app for iPads/iPhones & Androids.

Overview of Ebrary downloading options

Copy and print limits on most ebrary ebooks are based on the following percentage of the total number of pages in a book. (per book, per user session). Some publishers have stricter restrictions: 

  • Pages you can copy = 15% 

Copying multiple selections from one page only counts as one copy

  • Pages you can print = 30%

E-books on Ebsco**

 

**You will be prompted to login to download a book or chapter. This is a free/personal EBSCOhost account and you can use any username/password. 

Yes! You can download EBSCOhost E-books for up to 7 days at a time. 

In order to download an EBSCO e-book you must first set up a free My EBSCOhost account. You can then download an entire E-book using Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) (not available for on Kindles) for up to 7 days.

After you check-out and download your eBook:

  • You can transfer the e-book to your Adobe Digital Editions-compatible mobile device.

  • You can re-download the e-book from your "My EBSCOhost" folder at any time during the 7 day checkout period.

Up to 60 pages of an E-book can be printed or saved per user as a PDF file.

ABC-CLIO E-book Collection

No. These e-books cannot be downloadedthey must be read on devices connected to the Internet.

You can print one page at a time All titles have unlimited, simultaneous access
ACLS Humanities E-Books No, The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) e-books cannot be downloaded. You must view them on a device connected to the Internet. 

ACLS Humanities E-Books follows fair-use rights and restrictions for all books on its site. This means that you may print pages for your personal research use only.

For best printing results see Viewing Options and choose “Page pdf.” The default setting is set to both view and print three pages at a time. 

All titles have unlimited and multi-user access.

Oxford Scholarship Online

4 subject collections:
Economics & Finance
Philosophy
Political Science
Religion

You can download an individual chapter from each Oxford Scholarship Online title, or up to 5% of the pages of any title, whichever is greater.

You can print up to a single chapter from each Oxford Scholarship Online title or up to 5% of the pages of any title, whichever is greater.

Oxford ebooks vary considerably. Some titles only allow single-user access, while others allow multi-user.

Project Muse E-books

Yes! Project Muse e-books can be downloaded, but only chapter by chapter as PDF files. FAQs 

There are no restrictions on downloads or printing.

All ebooks are multi-user access.
Safari Technical Books Online No, these titles cannot be downloaded; they must be read on devices connected to the Internet. You can print one page at a time.

We have purchased access to 30 seats per title which can be used simultaneously.

 

SpringerLINK

Yes, there is a Download PDF option that allows you to download a chapter at a time. PDF files can be viewed on most mobile devices.

Springer e-books also has a “My Copy” option to purchase a soft-cover version of E-books for $24.95. Delivery takes up to 8-11 business days.
You can print or save one chapter (PDF file) at a time. All ebooks are multi-user access.
