Demand Driven Acquisitions @ USC: Home

Demand-driven acquisitions provides access to thousands of eBook titles that the Libraries pays for only upon user access.

What is DDA?

The idea behind Demand Driven Acquisitions (DDA) is that thousands of e-book records, for titles we do not own, are added to Summon to be discovered by our users. We only pay for a DDA e-book if and when a member of the USC community uses it. This allows us to extend our budget, while also dramatically expanding access to content to meet the varied preferences and needs of our diverse population.

Instead of librarians purchasing e-books title by title, we proactively curate a DDA e-book profile for the subjects, publishers and price caps of titles we want to include and then a list of records is generated for inclusion. Once added to Summon, whether or not we purchase a title is up to our users.

DDA @ USC

Demand Driven Acquisitions (DDA) first started at USC in Fall 2012, when Jesse Holden, Karen Howell, Beth Namei and Win Shih submitted a Dean's Challenge Grant Proposal. It has evolved into a current regular practice for collecting and making e-books available to USC students, faculty and staff.

DDA Overview

USC uses EBL as its DDA vendor.

DDA e-books are made accessible in Quick Search (Summon). Only when a DDA e-book is purchased is a record added to Homer catalog.

EBL e-books have a free browse period (5 minutes for non-owned/DDA titles; 10 minutes for owned titles).

This free browsing period is not counted as a loan instance. A loan instance is defined as access by an individual patron within a 24-hour period that exceeds the free browse period.
