RefWorks: One Line/Cite View

Brief guide to using RefWorks in the USC Libraries environment.

Formatting your paper with One Line/Cite View

To insert citation references into your paper:

  1. In RefWorks, select One Line/Cite View from the Switch to: drop-down menu listed just below the navigation menu.
  2. Click on the Cite link next to the appropriate reference. A Citation Viewer window will appear containing the citation formatted something like {{54 Johnson;}}. [To cite a second reference in the same location just click on the Cite link by any other reference.]
  3. Once you have all of the references you need for a particular in-text citation, click on the Select Citation button in the Citation Viewer window and copy the selection (CTRL+C or right-click and choose copy from the menu).
  4. Go to your document in your word-processor, click where you want the citation inserted and then paste the citation.
  5. Be sure to Clear the Citation Viewer window before creating your next citation.
  6. When you have inserted all your citation references, save the document before formatting the paper and the bibliography.

Note: Your paper must be saved as a .doc, .docx, .odt or .rtf file in order for RefWorks to be able to read and format it.

To create your bibliography and format your paper:

  1. In RefWorks, click on the Bibliography menu
  2. Select Format Paper and Bibliography
  3. Under Document to Format, select the document file you just saved; you can browse to it by clicking the Browse button
  4. Select the appropriate Output Style from the list.
  5. Click Create Bibliography. RefWorks creates a new document with bibliography formatted in the selected style.

Follow your browser's instructions for viewing the file and be sure to save the document to your hard disk before closing. Your original document remains the same as it was before you formatted it.
