Statistical Agencies

Below is a list of the statistical agencies of the United States government with a legal mandate to collect data and make it available to the public.

  • Bureau of Economic Analysis -- produces economic accounts statistics that enable government and business decision-makers, researchers, and the American public to follow and understand the performance of the nation's economy. To do this, BEA collects source data, conducts research and analysis, develops and implements estimation methodologies, and disseminates statistics to the public.
  • Bureau of Justice Statistics --  the primary statistical agency of the Department of Justice, the agency collects, analyzes, publishes, and disseminates information on crime, criminal offenders, victims of crime, and the operation of justice systems at all levels of government.
  • Bureau of Labor Statistics -- measures labor market activity, working conditions, price changes, and productivity in the U.S. economy to support public and private decision making.
  • Bureau of Transportation Statistics -- source of statistics on commercial aviation, multi-modal freight activity, and transportation economics, and provides context to decision makers and the public for understanding statistics on transportation and its transformational role in society.
  • Census Bureau -- leading provider of data about population estimates and demographic components of change, such as births, deaths, and migration. The agency also conducts demographic, economic, and geographic studies of other countries and strengthens statistical development around the world.
  • Department of Agriculture Economic Research Service -- gathers data to anticipate trends and emerging issues in agriculture, food, the environment, and rural America and to conduct high-quality, objective economic research to inform and enhance public and private decision making.
  • Energy Information Administration -- collects, analyzes, and disseminates independent and impartial energy information to promote policy making, efficient markets, and public understanding of energy and its interaction with the economy and the environment.
  • National Agricultural Statistics Service -- conducts annual surveys and prepares reports covering virtually every aspect of U.S. agriculture, such as, production and supplies of food and fiber, prices paid and received by farmers, farm labor and wages, farm finances, chemical use, and changes in the demographics of U.S. producers.
  • National Center for Education Statistics -- primary federal entity mandated to collect, collate, analyze, and report complete statistics on the condition of education in the U.S. and report on education activities internationally.
  • National Center for Health Statistics -- collects, analyzes, and disseminates timely, relevant, and accurate health data and statistics to guide actions and policies to improve the health of the U.S. population.
  • National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics -- serves as a clearinghouse for the collection, interpretation, analysis, and dissemination of objective science and engineering data in broad areas of research and development, science and engineering workforce, U.S. competitiveness in science, engineering, technology, and research and development, and the condition and progress of STEM education in the United States.
