Historic Preservation in Architecture and the Built Environment: Finding Journal and Newspaper Articles

A selective guide to researching the history of built environments, landscapes and buildings, with special emphasis on sources related to Los Angeles. It was created in support of the Heritage Conservation Program at the USC School of Architecture.

Locating Articles

Databases are listed in alphabetical order:

 

America History and Life – an important source for articles in American history.   

 

America’s Historic Newspapers - includes African American Newspapers, 1827-1998; Hispanic American Newspapers, 1808-1980.  

 

Art and Architecture Archive -  This is a full-text archive of magazines comprising key research material in the fields of art and architecture, dating from the late-nineteenth century to the twenty-first. It does not include the most recent article citations, which may be found in the Avery Index (below).

 

Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals - a premier source for articles in the field of architecture, landscape architecture, and architectural and urban history.  

 

Engineering Village – a source for articles, studies, technical papers, and reports in the many fields of engineering, including in such areas as structures and materials.

 

Historic Newspapers in Proquest – includes the Los Angeles Times and the Los Angeles Sentinel
